This series explores the metaphorical connection between the solid object of remembrance and the ephemeral, imagined space of doorways. During the pandemic I became interested in the texture and color of weathered grave markers for the way over time, nature replaces the human touch of carved names with the dramatic effects of wind and weather, and for the way headstones echo the shape of doorways. Referencing photographs I took during my visits to two cemeteries from the 1700s, I used repetition of form and pattern with slight differentiations in palette and texture to explore the materiality of imagined weather and weight. The curved black forms read visually as both object and space. Headstone as thing/marker and doorway/space.
